come see me?

HI HI HI

i miss you. i love you.

i've completed two full days of rehearsal for the piece i'm performing this weekend (two posts down...) and i'm SOOO excited about it. i have lots of bruises from shoving my body into tiny spaces, but all the people are great, and its a lot of fun.

if you're close to philly you should come! it's Friday the 5th at 12:30p and 7p, as well as Saturday the 6th at 1p. the audience meets at Love Park (16th and John F Kennedy Blvd), and follows the dancers (me!).

maybe give me a call if you want to come and i can tell you the best way to get here/we can plan time to hang out. oh... full info here: http://www.livearts-fringe.org/2008/details.cfm?id=3135

LOVE YOU

y'all better plan a roadtrip to philly in sept

i just landed a job. a dancing job. let me explain...

last week i went downtown and visited the office where i worked last year. reminder - i worked for the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival & Philly Fringe. the festival spans the first two weeks of september. SO - while i was there they told me about a piece in the festival that is coming here from Austria. it's a piece by Austrian choreographer Willi Dorner called Bodies in Urban Spaces. AND he is using all local dancers for the piece. and whadaya know - they still needed dancers as of last week when i saw them. so i said 'pick me pick me!'

they explained they wanted dancers with a background in contact improv... um helloooo dd and lr and hh. apparently there was a workshop/audition thing back in april when us kids were still in school, but some dancers have since dropped out. so they asked for my resume to show to the choreographer, just to make sure i was legit enough. well, the peeps down at the festival just emailed me to say 'let's do it!' so here i go - my first paying gig with a foreign choreographer, probably first gig in phl. haha toughest audition yet... juuuust kidding.

here's the info: Friday 9/5 at 12:30p and 7p, Saturday 9/6 at 1p... it's FREE... it starts at Love Park (ya know, the LOVE statue... 16th and JFK Blvd.), and continues to take you throughout the city (site specific? yes.)

this will give you an idea as to what i will be doing throughout the city as part of this piece:

so come see me! more info about the piece, and about the whole festival is here http://www.pafringe.org/2008/details.cfm?id=3135

love love love you.

trying to get in

hi my friends. i miss you. i think of you often.

so my whole time being home i've just been thinking about how to arrange life: dance, work, combining it all... i don't know how! needless to say i haven't done much of either. though i do have a couple things to write about from this past week.

on sunday night my brother and i went downtown to the Susan Hess Modern Dance Studio. every year they are a few choreographers in residence at this studio, and on Sunday they had a showing of their work thus far. finally i found somewhere in Philly that seems to be where i'll fit! i was excited by some of the work, not so thrilled by some, but it was still nice to see things happening. i used this as a networking opportunity as well. i talked to a few people who are involved in philly dance things. one guy i talked to was awesome. he told me places to find dance opportunities and invited me to see some of his work thursday night for free downtown, part of a festival that's going on right now. anyhow, i told him i graduated from conn and he said "oh - with the dorf!" love it. really everyone knows him. oh and this dude is going to be down at ADF for a bit - his name is Jaamil Olawale Kosoko... talk about philly with him if you see him, halee!

so last night i went to that same studio for a modern class. the studio is pretty nice, its a wood floor, but lots of windows. the teacher was really sweet and asked "was your training like... release-y?" and was happy when i told her yes. the class was ok, i would have liked to move a bit more than we did, especially since it was a 2 hr class. i feel like our profs did more in an hour 15 than she did in 2, oh well. maybe other classes are different. so at the end she asked me who my main influences were. again, i said david. and she said "oh - david is delicious." i LOVE it. we're so freaking lucky.

that's all my news for now i guess. i can't wait to go to concord and dance all day every day for three weeks. i already know i won't want it to end, then i have to come back and face the reality of home/finding work/missing so much dance... blah blah.

can't wait to hear other exciting things from all! i love you, i miss you.

A D F ! !

Hello my darlings...where is everyone? I miss y'all terribly -- dancing here at ADF makes me wish we were all together in Myers again.

I'll recap my adventures thus far because it has certainly been a trip. After our debut in NYC and three hours of sleep I left the city to get my car from Kaitlin's house and drive to North Carolina. However, I realized that I had left my debit/credit card in the ATM in NYC and 60 dollars would not get me as far south as I needed to go. So I spent an hour and a half in Delaware and eventually got some money wired to me. Thank you Mom. Anyway I got to ADF at 5:45 pm and had an audition at 6:30. The craziness continued for a few days with preview classes and auditions. But here is how it all shook down: Raja got called back for basically all of the past/forward pieces (past/forward is a concert at the end of the year featuring student performers in either reset work or new work), I got called back for two of three I auditioned for, Lily got called back for on and Liz none. Liz also didn't make it into any of the repertory classes but both Abby Yager and Keith Thompson (two incredibly beautiful and successul dancer, uh hum danced with Trisha Brown for years) didn't get into anything their first year at ADF. But Liz is going to work on her choreography which is great because I think we can all agree she rocks. So continuing on, Lily made a few reps, I made a few reps, Raja made a few reps. I'd say Conn is very well represented this year at ADF! I am taking Abby Yager's technique class AND her Trisha Brown rep which is a piece called Solo Olos I think from her line dances. It's awesome, and Raja is doing it as well. I also was the first female alternate for the past/foward laura dean piece Tympani. I was really psyched on it and wanted to at least understudy...I wasn't even sure if I would be able to do it if I got the chance to because I'll be missing a few days of rehearsal to perform in New Haven. Anyway -- the rehearsals were tough (we do this thing called spotless spins which is basically like the whirling dervishes but choreographed...for at least 4 minutes straight) and I wasn't sure if I made the right decision to understudy instead of taking another rep or technique class. But, Rodger Belman, the man who is resetting the piece, told me I was dancing well and he was happy to have me there and "you never know whats going to happen." So, today what happened was this other kid Matt quit because he decided his body wasn't really fit for the piece...we do these big fans and all this spinning and he wasn't feeling it. So, I'll get to perform it now! The show is the 14th-16th of July and it's so exciting! A good lesson in understudying!

But -- ADF is quite the trip...all I can say is I am sure to be forever grateful that I went to Conn. I hope you all are as well! Sorry for the length and the possibly excessive information but I figured I'd let you guys know what I've been up to and I want to know the same about y'all!

Oh but the hardest thing I've done thus far at ADF is babysit this beautiful six month old baby. I just rocked her to sleep and I think I might be sore from it tomorrow.

Much love from Noth Carolina -- Halee

Live from New York City

We (Kaitlin, Z and I) keep joking about posting a super obnoxiously detailed entry sharing our mini-tour adventures. But...that would be super obnoxious...and we should just write SOMETHING, anything really.

Here goes: as Lisa said, the three of us went to the Taylor audition. What the hell we were doing in leotards and lipstick?

Then, K and I went to Minnesota and played with Z until Tommy, Lily, and Chris came out. We all stayed at the Hutcheson's and it was one big circus. We put on a show in the Barbara Barker theater at the University of Minnesota. We had the coolest tech guy, Collin, and Chris Davis was the reason the show happened...thank you Chris. If you haven't read his blog, do so -- I hope there is a picture of the car he's driving...

Anyway the show went well and we had an excellent time in MN. K and I went to a Twin's game with the Hutcheson fam but we had to return home on our drive to the stadium because there was a tornado warning. But don't worry, we waited out the inch and a half hail, no tornado, and we made it to the game eventually.

Then, K and I separated at the Newark airport. I went back to New London, K went back to New Jersey. And now! We're all in the city (New York City, you know) for ACDFA Nationals! We went to the first show last night -- some excellent dancing, and some not so excellent dancing. The crew includes Heidi, Lan Lan, and Richard. Our very own Lisa Ro just arrived in the city and is coming to our performance tonight! We had tech a few hours ago and THANK THE LORD Les Dickert came to do lights. Isn't that incredible? Oh but here is the best part --

Best Part -- K and I were in Claire's buying new pearls for Z's piece and we decided to get some new sunglasses (2 pair for $14...what a deal!) and as we were looking we heard familiar notes coming through the speakers...it was our SENIOR BOW song! We rocked out, needless to say. K said, "Aw, they're with us!" So not only are you in our hearts, you are in our ears. Or something...haha.

So tonight we're having our NYC premiere...

Kaitlin Says "RAWR and I love you"

Signing off - H. Here with K and L. MUCH LOVE.

In case you forgot what we look like...

auditions: 2; callbacks: 0

this is what i've been up to since graduation:

lots of bumming around my house, lots of tv. one trip to the jers shore with my parents.

PT - first k, h and i auditioned for paul taylor. that was a joke and a half, funny experience. there were many pretty dancers in bright unitards who fit the bill better than us 3 popomo dancers. so we walked out after 45 mins max with a lung full of PT's cigarette smoke, and no callback. no worries, we moved right on to alex beller's class at DNA, got our groove back, and played in nyc for the day.

misnomer - then i ventured back to nyc by myself, to audition for misnomer. this one was a little bit more appropriate. it was at trisha brown's studios. i enjoyed the movement, it was really laid back, the dancers were nice. i made it through the cut they made half way through the 1.5 hr audition! alas, no callback. that's ok, it was definitely a positive, pleasant experience.

i didn't expect to do this much auditioning right away, but now i think it will slow down. but the dancing will not: i just decided for sure that i'm gonna go to Summer Stages at Concord Academy (holla back daria!). so i will be playing with dan wagoner and tere o'connor and eiko/koma for 3 weeks! if you're in boston from july 6-26, give me a call!!

maybe best of all - i think i'm going to have a babysitting job for the month of june, which will save my bank account... yaaay!

i love you all, can't believe its been 2 weeks since the big day.... i miss you, i love you, i love you, i miss you.
